Our client is seeking a highly experienced Journeyman Network Engineering SME to lead the design, integration, and security of next-generation tactical and enterprise networking solutions. This role is pivotal in supporting a high-visibility defense technology program that connects airborne platforms with secure digital infrastructure and broader battle networks. You will play a key role in architecting systems that leverage SATCOM, software-defined radios (SDRs), cross-domain solutions, and software-defined networking (SDN) to ensure real-time, multi-level secure communications across dynamic operational environments.

What You’ll Do:

Architecture & Design

  • Lead development of a reference network architecture spanning edge hardware, software builds, and node management systems.
  • Define advanced network configurations, including routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, IS-IS), QoS policies, encryption overlays (IPSec), and cross-domain/multi-level security data flows.
  • Develop system modeling artifacts (e.g., SysML) supporting a government-owned digital thread.

Integration & Lab Leadership

  • Configure and integrate routers, switches, firewalls, modems, and SDRs for use in lab environments and eventual field deployment.
  • Drive interface control documentation (ICDs) for platform integration and airborne mission systems.
  • Develop automated testing frameworks (e.g., IXIA, Spirent, Ansible) to validate network performance, security, and resilience.

DevSecOps & Cybersecurity

  • Embed cybersecurity best practices into the development pipeline, including zero-trust principles and continuous authorization (ATO) documentation.
  • Support the implementation of SDN solutions for dynamic path selection across airborne and ground nodes.
  • Maintain compliance with DoD cybersecurity standards and conduct vulnerability scans (e.g., ACAS, SCAP).

Fielding & Operations

  • Collaborate with platform teams to convert lab configurations into flight-ready systems.
  • Contribute to airworthiness assessments, test authorizations, and operational documentation.
  • Support helpdesk operations, monitoring dashboards, and network troubleshooting.

Leadership & Mentorship

  • Serve as a senior technical advisor to integrated product teams and program leadership.
  • Present network status, risks, and performance metrics in technical and program-level reviews.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, fostering knowledge transfer and upskilling of internal teams.

Must-Haves:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Active TS/SCI clearance
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
  • 8+ years of experience designing, integrating, and securing mission-critical IP networks within the DoD or IC
  • Deep expertise in routing/switching (Layer 2/3), SATCOM backhaul, RF/mesh networking, and transport enclaves in contested or bandwidth-limited environments
  • Demonstrated experience with cross-domain solutions, NSA Type-1 crypto, and multi-level security architectures
  • Hands-on experience with network test/validation tools and scripting/automation (Python, Ansible, Terraform)

Nice-to-Haves:

  • CCNP/CCIE, JNCIE, or equivalent expert-level certification
  • Prior work on tactical data links or airborne networking programs
  • Familiarity with containerized networking and classified DevSecOps pipelines
  • Experience shepherding RMF packages through eMASS to full ATO
  • Agile/Scrum or SAFe certification
