Design Lead

Overview

The Design Lead translates strategic client goals into compelling design solutions, establishing the conceptual and stylistic vision for projects. This role orchestrates the work of the design team and production professionals, oversees client communication, and ensures cohesive execution of visual strategies. The Design Lead drives profitable initiatives to grow and diversify the Design department, provides its strategic vision, and manages the client portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:

• Creative Direction & Execution:
  • Develop strategic creative solutions aligned with client goals.
  • Lead and oversee creative projects from concept to production (branding, websites, marketing collateral).
  • Execute creative for large projects and assign team roles.
  • Maintain brand consistency and quality across all deliverables, reviewing team work.
  • Collaborate with Interactive Lead on digital design direction.
  • Oversee the visual direction of the company’s own brand.
• Team Leadership & Development:
  • Act as the primary contact and mentor for the Design Team, fostering professional growth.
  • Lead team meetings, including weekly sessions to review projects, troubleshoot, educate, and explore new techniques.
  • Monitor and manage daily team performance, project timelines, and budgets (P&L, revenue goals).
  • Support salary decisions and career path development.
• Client & Stakeholder Management:
  • Maintain open communication with Account Executives and clients regarding project progress, timelines, and issues.
  • Lead creative presentations to clients.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to achieve account goals.
• Project & Vendor Coordination:
  • Coordinate project expectations and direct third-party vendors (photographers, printers, videographers).
  • Evaluate project and team performance with Project Managers to inform future strategies.
• Business & Department Growth:
  • Identify opportunities for performance improvement, upselling, and department diversification.
  • Participate in business development: meet prospects, provide estimates, and work with leadership on client renewals.
  • Lead design initiatives across the organization.

Essential Technology Skills:

• Proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud, macOS.
• Experience with project management/time tracking software, email platforms (e.g., MailChimp), web development platforms (e.g., Contentful, WordPress, Squarespace), and internal communication tools (e.g., Slack).
• Knowledge of print production processes (press checks).
• InVisionApp experience is a plus.

Prior Experience:

• Minimum 5 years in the design field.
• Team management experience is a plus.
• Experience working with photographers/videographers.
