Project Overview: 


Our Clients is an AI-first company and their Research leads the charge advancing the state-of-the-art in AI, CS, and beyond. Our PA’s work covers everything from Natural Language Understanding, Deep Learning, Human Computer Interaction, Machine Perception and Algorithms, to Accelerated Science, Nuclear Fusion, Climate Change, and Quantum Computing.


The Starsight initiative’s goal is to enable discovery and collaboration across research projects, facilitate better decision making, and understand the complex relationships between research efforts as they evolve from idea to product. We also support PubTools, which is used across to publish over 2500 papers each year. 


Overall Responsibilities: 


The Starsight team is seeking a generalist UX designer to help innovate on internal tools that support Research. In this role, you’ll be working with a cross-functional team to understand user needs, define the workflows and detailed design, and iterate on improvements identified though user research sessions with our users. Two critical workflow tools you’ll be working on include PubTools and Research Hub.


Top Daily Responsibilities: 


  • Support all UX needs across PubTools and Research Hub web applications:

  • Communicate the user experience at various stages of the design process with wireframes, flow diagrams, storyboards, mockups, and/or high fidelity prototypes.

  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and cross-functional stakeholders to understand requirements, and provide creative, thoughtful solutions.

  • Build on existing design patterns to promote visual consistency and polish across applications.

  • Participate in user research activities with direct engagement with internal users, following best practices.

  • Self-prioritize and manage multiple concurrent workflows utilizing strong communication and collaboration skills.


Mandatory Skills/Qualifications: 


  • Fluency using Figma to generate low- and high-fidelity mocks.

  • Familiarity designing web applications using Angular component libraries.

  • UX writing training or experience.


Non-Essential Skills/Qualifications: 


  • Experience or training in accessible design.

  • Experience working collaboratively with a distributed team.

  • Interest or experience in building internal tools that support Research or similar environments.


Skill/Experience/Education Mandatory


  • Aesthetic sensibility Ability to make design decisions that increase the overall appeal of a product based on relevant aesthetic trends and appropriate application of their brands and product brand styling. 

  • Craftsmanship Ability to make design decisions that result in a coherent product, platform, or user experience, including the ability to question and assess execution, craft, longevity, and scale of designs.

  •  Data-driven design Ability to analyze information, draw conclusions, generate alternatives and solutions, and evaluate outcomes. This includes the ability to use data to add value to business planning and strategies. 

  • Interactive technology Knowledge of how people use and interact with technology in order to influence the design, evaluation, and iterative improvement of interactive hardware and software systems. 

  • Presentations Ability to prepare effective presentations in content and function, and to speak competently to the level of the audience. 

  • Product design Knowledge of product design principles and user-centric processes. 

  • Product development lifecycle Knowledge of the overall process for developing products. This includes knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of engineering and other functions, major phases, checkpoints, and deliverables. This also includes the ability to identify common issues and considerations for delivering a product.

  •  Software systems thinking Ability to analyze situations or problems at the system level or from a broader technical or organizational perspective. This includes the ability to consider how factors or components in a system interrelate and work over time within the context of larger systems. 

  • Storytelling Ability to influence and inspire an audience by crafting stories using data that elicit empathy or create buy-in. UX research methodology Knowledge of principles and methods for defining and measuring UX, and the ability to adapt UX research methods to the appropriate user interface and platform.

  •  User behavior Knowledge of behavioral characteristics of users and their goals with regards to the problem being solved. This includes the knowledge of how user behavior informs product design and development.

The target hiring compensation range for this role is the equivalent of  $76.48 to 81.22 an hour. Compensation is based on several factors including, but not limited to education, relevant work experience, relevant certifications, and location.
